CanSkate & PreCanSkate
Parent FAQ

What should my skater wear to CanSkate?
Skaters should wear comfortable, warm athletic clothing that allows them to move freely. Layers are recommended, as skaters can warm up quickly while skating. Gloves or mittens are required, and a properly fitted, CSA-approved hockey helmet is mandatory for CanSkate participants.

What equipment does my skater need?
Skaters need properly fitted skates, a CSA-approved hockey helmet, gloves or mittens, and comfortable clothing. Hockey or figure skates are both appropriate for CanSkate. Check out our Equipment Guide for more information on choosing and caring for equipment. For more information, see the equipment guide below.

Does my child need to know how to skate before joining CanSkate?
Not at all! CanSkate is designed for beginners and skaters of all ability levels. Whether your child has never been on the ice before or already has some skating experience, our coaches will work with them at their individual skill level.

What happens if my child has never skated before?
That’s completely okay! Our coaches are experienced in working with new skaters and will help them become comfortable on the ice while developing their skating skills through fun and age-appropriate activities.

Can I stay and watch my child?

Yes! Parents and caregivers are welcome to watch from the designated viewing areas. For the safety of all skaters, a parent or designated adult must remain in the arena for the entire duration of the session. Please ensure that your child has a responsible adult available in case they need assistance during the session.

What if my child is nervous or cries on the ice?
It’s very common for young skaters to feel nervous at first. Our coaches will work patiently with them and help them become comfortable at their own pace. Some skaters need a few sessions before they feel confident on the ice — that’s perfectly normal!

How often should my child attend CanSkate?
Consistency is one of the best ways to help skaters build confidence and develop their skills. We encourage families to attend every scheduled session whenever possible.

How does my child progress through CanSkate?
CanSkate focuses on developing fundamental skating skills through a series of progressive stages. Coaches assess skaters throughout the season and help them work toward the next skills appropriate for their individual level.

How will I know how my child is progressing?
Skaters' progress is tracked throughout the season, and families will receive progress reports outlining the skills their skater has achieved and the areas they are continuing to work on. See our Sample Progress Report for an example.

When will my child move up to the next program?

At the Woodville Skating Club, the program that our CanSkaters would graduate into is our STAR 1-3 program. In order to join that program, skaters must have fully passed all badges in the CanSkate program.

What if my child misses a session?
If your skater is unable to attend a session, please let us know when possible. Unfortunately, missed sessions generally cannot be made up, but your skater can continue working on their skills at the next session.

What if my child is sick?
If your child is feeling unwell, has a fever, or is experiencing symptoms that would make skating uncomfortable, please keep them home and allow them to recover. When in doubt, it’s always better to rest and return when they’re feeling well.

What if my child gets injured during the season?
Please let the club know about any injury that prevents your skater from participating. Depending on the circumstances and length of the absence, the club can discuss available options with your family.

When should my child arrive for CanSkate?
Please arrive with enough time to get skates and equipment on and be ready to enter the ice at the scheduled session time. Arriving early helps avoid a rushed start and gives your skater time to get comfortable.

Can my child use figure skates or hockey skates?
Yes! Both figure skates and hockey skates are suitable for CanSkate. The most important thing is that the skates fit properly and are in good condition.

Should I buy new skates or can I buy used skates?
Used skates can be a great option, particularly for growing children. If purchasing used skates, make sure they fit properly, provide adequate support, and are in good condition. Avoid skates that are significantly worn down or no longer provide proper ankle support.

Does my child need a skating bag?
A skating bag isn't required, but it can be helpful for keeping skates, gloves, extra socks, and other equipment together.

Can my child wear snow pants on the ice?
Snow pants can be worn, particularly for younger or beginner skaters who need extra warmth and protection. However, as skaters become more comfortable and progress, flexible athletic or skating pants may allow for easier movement.

Can my child participate if they are afraid of falling?
Yes! Falling is a normal and important part of learning to skate. Coaches teach skaters how to fall safely and get back up, helping them develop confidence and balance.

What should I do if my child is struggling with a skill?
Every skater develops at their own pace. If your child is having difficulty with a particular skill, give them time and encouragement. Our coaches are happy to answer questions and can let you know what you can practice at home.

Can we practice CanSkate skills outside of lessons?
Absolutely! Additional skating time is a great way to build confidence and reinforce skills. Even short, fun skating opportunities can help your skater progress.

Who should I contact if I have a question about my child’s skating?
If you have questions about your skater's progress, equipment, or the CanSkate program, please reach out to the Woodville Skating Club. Our team is happy to help!
